After a couple months, I received a call from a publisher who was interested in using the article as a book chapter dealing with teenage crime. He sent me a $500 check and I forgot about it. I don’t know the title of the book, but I received critical comments for years.

Yesterday, when I went to my website, I discovered the article and saw 50 replies that had been added over the years. The comments that I had never read were pathetic and make curious reading—the poor grammar, punctuation, logic, etc. Anyway, I decided to update and rewrite the original column as reproduced below since it is so timely:

Our city streets are dark, dirty, dangerous, and often dominated by raping, robbing, and rampaging children. Juveniles under 18 accounted for almost 14% of all violent crime arrests and over 22% of all property crime arrests according to the CDC for 2010 and 784 teens were arrested for murder!

We are seeing more and more very young people commit serious, sordid, and sadistic crimes–some kids as young as six! As families, homes, and churches implode, a subculture of juvenile criminals has developed.

Juveniles used to be considered young, athletic students with ruddy complexion, squeaky voice and acne, but now they are often vindictive, vicious, and violent criminals.

We have been assured that “there is no such thing as a bad boy” (or girl); however, the fact is, there is no such thing as a good boy (or girl). No kid has to be taught to lie, steal, talk back, rebel, etc. It is human nature. Theologians call it the “fallen nature,” as a result of original sin. But since that is not politically correct, men have been conned into believing that all people are basically good–then they try to justify and explain why “good” people commit outrageously brutal crimes.

Part of the problem of juvenile crime is the criminal justice system itself. While ours may be the “best in the world” (what does that say about the rest of the world?) it is long overdue for a major overhaul. It is part of my recommended crime bill to insist on that overhaul.

Kids must no longer have a free ride until age 18. They must get the message that they will be held accountable for their actions with their names and photos published in the media, and their record following them if they continue into adult crime. Of course, they should not be glorified. Studies show that a juvenile’s crime record is one of the most valid predictors of repeat adult crime.

Young criminals should not be in school, and while the bleeding hearts whine about those kids, I prefer to show my concern for the large group who want to learn. Put the violent kids in a boot camp where they can be made into “young marines” under the tutelage of a traditional leatherneck trained at Parris Island.

Get them up at 5:00 a.m., feed them a big breakfast, and work them until they drop. Absolutely no back talk and only magic words such as “yes sir,” “no sir,” “please,” and “thank you, sir” would be permitted. And no psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or lawyer within 100 miles!

Those kids who are involved in nonviolent crime would be treated less severely. They would be forced to make restitution to their victims, clean up any mess they made and spend time in structured community service.

Kids must learn that justice will be swift, sure, and severe in the courts if not at home and school. Personal accountably will be the reality from now on. That will appall many social scientists and psychologists who tell us that a youth person is not responsible for personal actions. It all goes back, we are told, to poor potty training, low self-esteem, poor living conditions, etc., so a young person should not be held to an accounting for his crimes. My intellectual and scientific reply is poppycock, balderdash and a generous portion of hogwash—especially hogwash.

We are told that kids murder, mug, and maim because they grew up in poverty; however, poverty doesn’t cause crime; crime causes poverty. Juveniles, like adults, commit crimes because they choose to do so. And they must be held accountable.

When young criminals kill and rape, they should be treated like adults, even executing them! Most of us are horrified at that thought but if capital punishment can be defended (and it can be) then who is to say one must be 21? If a 16-year-old commits a vicious murder, who says he should not pay with his life? Of course, there must be an age below which a child would not be executed, but that is a political decision made in each state. Sadly, few politicians have the courage to make difficult decisions.

So the message to kids should be clear, concise, and conclusive. No free ride until 18. No anonymity. No blaming poverty, parents, or potty training for criminality. No more community service for rape and murder. Even the dullest teen will understand that society finally considers leniency a thing of the past. Hopefully such prior leniency will be considered lunacy.

Kids think they can get away with murder and they will continue to believe that until citizens force the criminal justice system to get its act together. When a few teens “walk the last mile,” other teens will get the message that sane, sensible, and scared people are taking over from the bleating hearts.

The radical leftist, upon reading this, will stand up and on cue, bleed all over himself; however, my heart bleeds for the innocent victims–not for criminals, young or old.

James Elliot took his .38 caliber revolver with him to carry out a robbery in Long Beach, California and the gun failed to fire leaving his intended victim wild-eyed in fear. James then did something that will guarantee his entrance into the Stupid Criminal Hall of Fame. He looked down the barrel and pulled the trigger again! This time it worked. Jimmy is no longer with us but then he never was!

Recently a man walked into a gun shop and tried to rob it with a ball bat! The owner and customer used their guns to convince him that he was deficient in his planning. Just as an intelligent person does not take a knife to a gun fight, you don’t take a ball bat to rob a gun store.

In February of 1990, super dumb thief David Zaback entered the H & J Leather & Firearms gun shop near Seattle, Washington. The store was full of customers who were buying and looking at firearms! Remember that it was a gun shop. The thief walked around a police car parked out front then entered through the front door and directly in front of him was a uniformed police officer standing at the counter drinking a cup of coffee with the store owner. Not being intimidated by the crowd (in the gun shop) or the police officer, the thief announced that a holdup was in progress and told everyone to put their hands on the counter telling them he would kill anyone who moved. The police officer drew his Glock 17 at the same time a clerk drew his 10mm semiautomatic and fired at the thief. By that time several customers (did I mention that it was a gun shop?) began firing at the would-be thief. He was pronounced dead, graveyard dead, at the scene.

Crime scene investigators discovered 47 expended cartridge cases in the gun shop and a subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. That number was about the same as his IQ! I assume the autopsy revealed that the thief’s brain had atrophied. A ballistics report revealed the shots were fired from seven different weapons.

A man walked into a Louisiana Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter, and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and demanded all the cash in the register which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving his $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer was $15 so his crime cost him $5.00! Usually crime does not pay but in this incident it cost the thief $5.00. If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, is a crime committed?

As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the woman was able to provide the police a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, “Yes, officer, that’s her. That’s the lady I stole the purse from.” That’s another sure member of the Stupid Criminal Hall of Fame.

The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 5 A.M., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn’t open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren’t available for breakfast. The frustrated gunman walked away.

David E. Edwards a former middle school principal in North Carolina is accused of sexually assaulting a student while the boy’s unsuspecting parent was outside the room! Deputies say that between 2009 and 2011, Edwards molested at least three boys between the ages of 11 and 14. With such natural audacity, Obama might find a place for him in his waning, worthless, and witless administration.

A woman called the police to ask them to settle a dispute with her and her drug dealer! They settled it. She went to jail.

Sane people are thrilled that those dimwitted criminals are in prison so they can’t breed and contaminate the gene pool even more.

An old college friend asked me recently where I really think America is headed. I basically said that our nation is an out-of-control train running top speed with an incompetent and suicidal engineer at the throttle. To change metaphors, our country is a packed jumbo jet with an unlicensed pilot at the controls. (While he’s not a real pilot, he did have breakfast with one at one of those local motels a few years ago.)

To be fair, the incompetent “pilot” has had help from Republicans and Democrats, in and out of Congress, including George W. Bush. With that, Republican fanatics just turned me off and went to the fridge for a can of adult refreshment.

While I have been an optimist all my life, believing a sovereign God is in control of our lives and over this world; I am convinced God permits us to hang ourselves. Believing that we will reap what we have sowed and we will reap proportionally, I think, out of various possibilities, we are going to experience the worst-case scenario. Yes, that is positive pessimism.

In no obvious sequence, I see the following taking place.

We are facing almost total rejection of mainline political parties with an infusion of new blood coming to power that may or may not keep their word once they get to Washington. It seems that when politicians arrive in D. C. they turn to the left. Power usually does that. They contract “Potomac fever” and become raving, lying, power-hungry aristocrats as the fever makes them think they really deserve all the praise, perks, and power that are handed over to them. However, even if the soon-to-be elected crowd is very courageous, competent, and committed it is too late, in my opinion, to do much more than delay the dismantling.

The stock market could fall far below 5,000 and gold pass $5,000 an ounce and unemployment pass 25%, producing tent cities or shantytowns across the nation. Soup lines in every city will be as common as political ads in October, straining churches and charity groups to the breaking point.

With fewer Americans working, the state and federal governments will be unable to pay their bills causing the printing of even more money (more inflation) or repudiating debt, including Social Security, Medicare, Military pensions, etc. That would result in Americans feeling abandoned, angry, and alarmed. Their protests could make the storming of the French Bastille look like a schoolroom fuss.

As America comes apart at the seams, I will be shocked if a coup d’état does not occur carried out by retired and presently serving military personnel who have been horrified watching America become a third world nation. When they are convinced that America has been taken over and is being dismantled, it will not be difficult for men to convince themselves that they have a duty to “do something” to save this country. After all, they will justify their action because “We took an oath to defend our country against domestic and foreign enemies.”

Muslim fanatics will take advantage of our problems or may be used as the trigger for these problems by launching a massive attack against our churches, governments, police departments, schools, and any place easily accessible to them. Alternatively, the attack may be low tech such as suicide bombers or mass random shootings since those are not complex and can be easily carried out causing unrest, uncertainty, and unlawfulness throughout every hamlet, town, and city in America.

Our largest, glitziest malls will be turned into ghost malls with only a few retail stores still in business.

We may see astronomical crime rates with child abuse, armed robbery, kidnappings, shootings, extortion, etc., doubling within months, and prisons packed and seething with angry, desperate, and hopeless people ready to explode

Frustrated, fearful people living on the edge will force divorce, abortion, and suicide rates into the stratosphere.

With crime exploding, police forces will be cut to the bone, leaving citizens without any promise of protection, forcing homeowners to defend themselves. .

As funding to cities and counties stops, so will the services as garbage stacks up, school buses stop running, all unnecessary classes eliminated such as all sports, foreign languages, home economics, shop, art, music, etc. Teachers and students will protest to no avail since if no funds are available, no checks can be written. I.O.U.’s will be normal for state and federal workers.

Gangs, KKK, skinheads, and other opportunists may control parts of major cities even into the suburbs. A spark such as the killing of a political demagogue or religious leader could ignite irrational actions resulting in major cities going up in flames. Gangs and mobs (but then, I repeat myself) would then take over neighborhoods and move to the countryside in search of food, fuel, and fun. Blood may run in the streets and neighborhoods as citizens fight back in self-protection.

My view of the immediate future and for decades ahead is one of gloom but long-term it is glory for Christians! However, we must live in the here and now, and Christians would be wise to plan for “hard times” because hard times are coming. During the trials, trouble, and turmoil ahead of us, men will finally realize that toys and things don’t matter and are not in the league with faith, friends, and family.

That’s what I think is really ahead of us. I hope and pray that I am wrong.
