disaster – Don Boys https://donboys.cstnews.com Common Sense for Today Sun, 05 Mar 2023 04:46:50 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.6.29 Normalcy Bias May Kill You! https://donboys.cstnews.com/normalcy-bias-may-kill-you https://donboys.cstnews.com/normalcy-bias-may-kill-you#respond Tue, 04 Aug 2020 16:03:10 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=2613 The normalcy bias, unknown to most people, refers to the inclination for people to lessen the probability of possible threats or their dangerous repercussions. Consequently, the normalcy bias causes many people not to prepare for natural disasters, accidents, and world pandemics. In simple terms, it’s the ostrich effect; however, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand! They aren’t that stupid. When an ostrich senses danger, it falls to the ground and remains still.

When uneducated, unthinking, and unconcerned people sense danger, they look to the government—when often the government is the problem.

With the Chinese coronavirus, the world has experienced the first world lockdown, and it was done based on dubious evidence. Not only businesses (which I may add, are in business to do business) shut down and stopped doing business, but all schools, parks, and most churches closed their doors. Attending church or continuing your business one-on-one was illegal, but you could legally protest in huge crowds!

The funeral for former congressman John Lewis in Atlanta was said by the media to have abided by facemasks and social distancing guidelines; however, that was an obvious lie. The audience was seated close together and the singing team and soloist were not masked or separated. So, it’s legal to protest and go to state-approved funerals but not go to church or run your business!

Since when did any official have the authority, power yes, authority, no, to tell churches they must close? Or, if they could open, they could not sing or have more than ten congregants? Never has a nation or the world made such a sea change so quickly.

But that could never happen to us. But it did. “But, it can’t last forever.” Are you sure? “Well, government officials will never let it get so bad that we run out of food and water.” Are you sure about that?

When God warned Noah that bad weather was coming and the earth would be inundated, he followed God’s instructions that involved long term planning. And many years of hard work. He was ready when the rain began. While a global flood had never happened before, Noah thought it best to prepare for it.

The normalcy bias could have killed everyone.

Five years ago, I wrote the following that is more relevant now than it was then.

The normalcy bias is a mental condition individuals experience when facing a disaster. It causes people to become vulnerable to approaching danger as they underestimate both the possibility of a disaster and its potentially dangerous impact. This often results in situations where people fail to prepare for a disaster, and that failure can be catastrophic on a state or national scale.

It is a mental condition that convinces a person that since it has never happened before, it can’t happen. Or “it won’t happen to me.” After all, this is America. We are special; however, we are not immune from natural or manmade disasters.

The town of Pompeii, located on the Bay of Naples, was a flourishing resort for wealthy, powerful, and élite citizens of Rome in the first century A.D. The city of about 20,000 citizens was located about five miles from Mount Vesuvius and citizens, slaves, tourists, and artisans jostled through the well-paved city streets. They passed elegant villas, taverns, cafes, bathhouses, and brothels to attend the arena that could seat 20,000 people.

Everyone knew about the volcano at Mount Vesuvius nearby, but it had been silent for over 1700 years. Nothing to worry about, but in August of 79 A.D., the mountain blew its top sending ashes, rocks, and hot gases 21 miles into the sky that could be seen for hundreds of miles.

Pliny the Younger was living with his uncle Pliny the Elder, an admiral of the Roman fleet who died in the eruption that had 100,000 times the thermal energy of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings. The younger Pliny watched the eruption from across the bay and then wrote, “I believed I was perishing with the world.” However, there was plenty of time to flee the eruption, yet about 2,000 people watched in wonder as death fell around them! The hot, heavy ash made it difficult to breathe, and then a 100-mile-per-hour surge of poisonous gas rushed down the mountain, killing every living thing in its path. When the mountain stopped shaking, spitting, and sputtering the next day, the silent city of the dead was covered with up to 20 feet of ashes, rocks, and lava.

Highly intelligent people watched the eruption until death devoured them, an ancient example of the normalcy bias.

When Hurricane Katrina slammed New Orleans Aug. 29, 2005, thousands of citizens refused to leave the city, and city officials didn’t even attempt to evacuate them. There were scores of parked buses that could have saved hundreds of people, but the mayor refused to give the order, and 1,461 people died. The National Hurricane Center warned on August 28 that the area would be “uninhabitable for weeks” after “devastating damage” caused by the storm. Finally, the day before the disaster, Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation, yet thousands of people refused to seek safety!

The media have defended those who decided not to evacuate the area “because they were mostly poor.” Wait a minute. Are we to believe that all those people did not have automobiles, did not have friends or family with cars, or could not afford a $50.00 bus ticket out of town? However, they could have walked away from danger! They didn’t leave because “I’m different,” or “It can’t happen here,” or “It can’t be that bad,” or “God (or government) won’t let it happen to me.” Normalcy bias killed again.

The mind seems to make an attempt to protect us from traumatic events that come our way. When some things are too troublesome, traumatic, or tragic, the mind often shuts down. One survivor from the Muslim terrorist attack on September 11 in New York City reports of going blind when she saw some of the 200 humans hitting the ground after falling 100 stories outside the Twin Towers. The human mind is an incredible organ, but obviously, there are some things too terrible to comprehend.

When faced with major danger, the mind goes into one of three modes: it will “suggest” flight, fight, or freeze. Many people freeze–and die.

Americans have had it too good, nice, easy, cushy, soft, and pleasant all their lives. Disaster does lie ahead; so each one, especially heads of households, must prioritize, plan, and prepare. You cannot plan for every contingency, but you can for some. And remember that “hope” is not a plan. And “thinking about it” is not a plan. Nor is “worrying about it” a plan. A plan requires a plan. If you don’t have one, then get one.

Trusting God is very important; yes, God feeds the sparrows, but He doesn’t put worms in their nests.

What’s in our future? It could be a total financial collapse of our economy far worse than the Great Depression. Such suggestions are no longer coming from just me and other “prophets of doom.” Highly respected economists tell us that it is only a matter of time. Not if, but when the big bubble bursts.

Jim Rogers is a famed billionaire investor co-founder of the Quantum Fund with George Soros. Jim said that we are in for a major financial meltdown that will be the most shaking financial event “we have ever seen in recorded history.” But surely not. “It just can’t happen to us.”

A study done in Britain revealed that Britain is only “nine meals from anarchy.” The Daily Mail said that it would take only “nine meals–three full days without food on supermarket shelves–before law and order started to break down, and British streets descended into chaos.” Furthermore, the food you eat for dinner tonight had to be brought an average of 1500 miles. What if the food or the trucks or the fuel or the drivers or the highways were not available to deliver that food?

“But that could never happen here,” says the average American as he snaps open another can of beer.

A financial collapse would bankrupt state and federal governments, and the feds would renege on their financial obligations. Tax payments to the IRS would plummet, and our national debt would really go into the stratosphere. Already billions of dollars in the hole, the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, an agency that guarantees pensions of major corporations, would go belly up. So would Social Security. Everyone would be on his own. “But our government would not permit that to happen.”

The disaster that does you in may be an epidemic that shuts down every school, church, theater, or even all public transportation. Hospitals and clinics will be overwhelmed, taking only the most diseased and dying. “But that couldn’t happen here.”

It may be an attack by one of the rogue nations such as China, North Korea, or Iran dropping an EMP device over a major heartland city knocking out all electronic devices including all electrical power, all automobiles, all cell and land phones, all elevators, televisions, radio, traffic lights, air traffic control, air travel, etc. In other words, we would be back in the 18th century. A major solar bombardment would have the same effect! “But that just couldn’t happen, could it?”

Naïve, confused, closed-minded Americans say, “The President would never declare martial law and incarcerate mass numbers of people who refuse to be vaccinated.” No, it hasn’t happened here, but something similar has sure happened elsewhere. Why can’t it happen here?

Tomorrow morning a dirty bomb may explode in the heart of Dallas or Washington revealing the fact that some suitcase bombs are circulating in Muslim circles. A mushroom cloud does not portend a normal life for anyone in America. But then, “It’s never happened here.” Yet!

It may only be a natural disaster that destroys your city, rendering you without utilities, food, employment, etc. But that disaster might ignite your normalcy bias that ends up killing you or your family. It is better to prepare and not need it than to not prepare and need it.

Hope is not a plan. Wishful thinking is stupid thinking.

Remember, it wasn’t raining when Noah entered the Ark!

Get Ready for a Major Terrorist Disaster! https://donboys.cstnews.com/get-ready-for-a-major-terrorist-disaster https://donboys.cstnews.com/get-ready-for-a-major-terrorist-disaster#comments Wed, 23 Dec 2015 20:31:18 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=1314 I don’t mean to alarm people, but I do want to alert, awaken, and activate everyone. Most readers will roll over and mutter, “Don’t bother me”; however, some will listen and change their direction.

If you awaken tomorrow morning and discover that a major U.S. city has been bombed and millions are dead with millions more exposed to radiation, you will understand that you have witnessed the demise of a once-great nation. Those with an understanding of history will also realize that we are surely in a Hundred Years’ War between koranic Muslims and the rest of the world. Muslims have known this was coming for decades.

If U.S. intelligence officials are wrong and there is no danger from terrorists and Islam is a peaceful religion hijacked by a few terrorists then breathe a sigh of relief, thank God for His mercy, and continue with your life. However, if U.S. spooks are right, you and your family will be cold, hungry, and dependent on others to provide for your basic needs. Is it wise to take such an unnecessary risk?

Some people do not want to recognize the problem because they are dreamers, others are delusional, and still others are deniers! The dreamer does not want his life to be totally upset (who does?), so he blithely walks through life without looking at reality. Dreamers are so much happier in their dream world. After all, in dreamland they don’t have any problems, don’t have to make difficult decisions, and always feel warm and fuzzy. There is no confrontation, conflict, or combat. So why wake up? I would like this column to be a fire bell in the night to awaken them from their slumber.

The delusional cannot be helped. They will not even consider the possibility that the world is going to undergo an incredible change very soon. They think by not wanting something to happen, it will not happen. They are wrong. Furthermore, handwringing won’t do any good either!

Then there are the deniers. These people have made up their minds that God would never permit America to go down. We are so special, so strong, and so supreme. So stupid.

So I have some practical suggestions for the approaching disaster. The power may be off for long periods of time so you may not have lights, heat, or refrigeration. Water may not be pumped into your home, and phones may not work, even cell phones since the towers may be destroyed. Elevators may not work; same with trains, subways, and traffic lights. Banks will fold as will insurance companies and major corporations. Don’t count on your job being there or your investments, even guaranteed investments. When governments teeter on the cusp of collapse, there are no guarantees. Well, you get the idea that you won’t have a nice day!

While no one on the face of the earth can say for sure how bad it is going to be, it will be bad, and Proverbs tells us that the prudent man looks ahead, sees the danger, and plans for it. The fool goes on and must suffer for his folly. So pray and hope for the best and prepare for the worst. After all, you don’t have to believe the worst is going to happen to prepare for it! Your fire insurance policy is an example of that. You don’t really expect a fire but you have insurance, don’t you?

I don’t want to be melodramatic but knowing that politicians have a tendency to over-react I see ominous days ahead. If our cities are in flames, jobs are gone, people are hungry, hospitals are full, funeral homes are open 24 hours, banks are closed, major corporations are bankrupt, government checks are no longer being mailed, citizens are angry, hungry, and scared then we can expect officials to continue to do stupid things, only quicker. Martial law may be the norm in disaster areas. We have never heard the chilling march of highly polished jackboots on deserted and darken streets; moreover, the Constitution may be put in a velvet box for the duration, and America may only be a goose-step away from goon squads.

You are not responsible for what government does but you are responsible for what you do. Moreover, you have control over your money. Make decisions today based upon what officials tell us will happen tomorrow. When cities are burning each person will try to cash in his chips, and you will have to stand in line, a very long line. When everyone wants out of the market at the same time, most people are crushed. That is what happens when a crowd of people runs for the exit at the same time. Only the first few usually make it without being crushed in the stampede, and that stampede will be worldwide. If the U.S. market plummets with the destruction of our major cities then the tsunami will swamp the markets of the world. That means worldwide depression.

Young stockbrokers who have never worked at any other job tell you that the market is not vulnerable as it was in the early 1930s. “We now have government controls in place. Don’t worry. Keep investing. The old rule has been repealed: what goes up does not have to come down. Just make out your check to the XYZ Investing Co. and we’ll take care of you.” The average investment counselor is like a small boy standing waist deep in gasoline flicking a cigarette lighter. Most people do not know how volatile the world markets are and how they respond to U.S. markets.

As for getting ready for bad times a good rule to follow is that it is better to be a year early than a day late. Pay off your house and car and purchase “things” that will be useful such as tools, guns, ammunition, food, etc. Think of what you might need if society closes down. You should purchase non-electric tools and make sure they are quality goods since they may have to last.

You should start putting aside small bills for the crash. While no one knows how long the money will be good, all societies must have a medium of exchange. U.S. money will probably be good but do not count on ATMs, banks, or credit cards.

Look for other ways to do things. Be innovative and inventive. Get rid of unimportant and nonessentials from your life. Have a massive yard sale and sell things you have not used in years. Keep in mind those things that could be used for barter, but non essentials will not have much demand. Now is the time to sell your baseball cards, beanie babies, cabbage patch dolls, and other collectibles.

The waters may be calm today but that does not mean there are no crocodiles in the water! Get out of the water now and prepare for a difficult tomorrow! The fuse is burning and the clock is ticking!

Suggestions to Prepare for Natural or Muslim-Made Disasters! https://donboys.cstnews.com/suggestions-to-prepare-for-natural-or-muslim-made-disasters https://donboys.cstnews.com/suggestions-to-prepare-for-natural-or-muslim-made-disasters#respond Fri, 20 Feb 2015 17:17:31 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=1039 The U. S. economy is so dependent upon electricity that if a significant collapse of the grid takes place, caused by an Electro-Magnetic Pulse weapon dropped by the “peaceful” Muslims or a super solar storm it could result in “catastrophic civilian casualties” according to Congressman Trent Franks who authored the SHIELD Act.

Therefore you should prepare for the worst and pray for the best. Your children should be aware of the possibilities but get them ready without scaring them to death! After all, there is no doubt that their lives will change forever, do not let this hit them in the face tomorrow morning. Carefully get them ready. Let them know that this disaster is no surprise to God. God did not look down recently and say, “Oops.” He has watched this coming on for many years and is permitting man to put himself in a “fine mess.”

Teach the children that they will have to assume more responsibilities around the house. (You should have been training them from their earliest days.) Discuss some of the things they can do to help in surviving and thriving after such an attack on America. Let them know that children all over the world will have to grow up a little quicker than in the past. They should learn to take care of their own rooms, clean out the garage so you can store some food there, and learn to care for the garden, to butcher rabbits, turkeys and clean fish. Let them know that they are an important part of the family unit. (Again, I hope they already know that.)

Teach them to respect, understand, and care for guns. They should know how to hunt and clean game before they need to do so for survival. Children are children, so plan for long nights without much to do. Purchase books, games, puzzles, and DVDs (although televisions may not work so wean them away from television now). Get involved in some of their games and read to the very young.

Purchase school materials for them while they are still available. The public school system and many Christian schools will probably fold in most areas. Prepare for such possibilities, and be sure to purchase Teacher’s Editions and answer keys.

When hard times come, do not wear gold jewelry or expensive clothes or drive large cars. Such people will be targets in an age of envy (generated by non thinking liberals for fifty years). Even decent people will be jealous of your apparent “good fortune.” Translation: you prepared and they did not!

Go to discount stores today, yes today, and purchase toilet paper, honey, salt, pepper, packaged and canned food, bags of rice and beans, various spices, tape, knives and batteries. Then you should buy some silver and   gold. A few boxes of anti-radiation tablets will be more valuable than gold if you are in a contaminated area after a nuclear powerplant meltdown. Get a supply today even if you don’t live near a nuclear plant.

Following are some items that should be in your home: Extra pair of eye glasses or contact lenses, needles and thread, plastic sheeting, medicine dropper, matches, flashlight and batteries, aluminum foil, disposable baby bottle liners, toilet paper, sanitary napkins, insect repellent, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, candles, lamp oil, battery operated smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors.

You also need paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils, baby needs, diapers (cloth), household bleach, Lysol, large and small plastic trash bags, deodorant, good shovel, hatchet, hack saw and extra blades, ammunition (can be used for bartering as well as protection), dish washing soap, bath soap, laundry soap, contraceptives, tools for repairs, kits to repair flat tires on various vehicles (also an air pump), assorted nails and screws, solder, lead, oil for autos and tractors, portable AM-FM radio, flashlights with plenty of batteries, duct tape, mouse traps, lime, shoe laces, rubber gloves, W-D 40 or similar product, extra set of tires and sparkplugs.

You should purchase garden tools, seeds, and everything necessary for a garden. If space is limited, forget flowers and plant a vegetable garden after all God did that after creating everything. Gen. 2:8 tells us “And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden.”

You may not have pure drinking water for a while so plan to treat your water from the roof or from a lake or pond. You can boil water for up to ten minutes and while it will kill the bugs, it will not help the taste much. However, you can add Kool-Aide, Tang, or other mix to improve the taste. It will also help the taste if you pour the water (after it has cooled) back and forth from different containers. Remember that boiling water does not remove toxic chemicals and metals.

I think the best decision is to buy a distiller. We have distilled our water for many years and add desired minerals to it.

You could always use household bleach to treat your water if the bleach contains a 5.25% solution of the chlorine compound sodium hypochlorite. It may warn, “Not for personal use,” but that can be disregarded (according to FEMA) if sodium hypochlorite is the only active ingredient. Purchase the brand that has no additives such as perfumes, soaps, etc. It takes 8 drops of bleach per gallon of clear water; 16 drops per gallon of cloudy water; 1/2 teaspoon per 5 gallons of clear water and I teaspoon per 5 gallons of cloudy water to make water drinkable.

After adding bleach to water, thoroughly mix by stirring then let stand for at least 30 minutes. Remember that iodine and bleach do not purify water but do make it safer by neutralizing harmful bacteria.

You can collect water at your downspout, your swimming pool, waterbed, back of commode, lake, ditch, river, etc.  You can even drag towels across the grass early in the morning and collect enough water to keep you alive! Remember that flowing water is preferred over still water and clear water is preferred over cloudy water.

You can purchase products that will treat water and keep it drinkable for about 5 years without using any other chemicals but don’t use milk jugs to store water since they will not withstand long-time storage. Plastic soda bottles can be used safely after a thorough cleaning with very hot water. Metal cans are not the best storage containers for water since the metal affects the taste. They may also rust.

The Bible teaches us to plan for what is approaching and experts tell us that powerless days are ahead of us. If they are wrong then we are not losers by preparing. Politicians always end a speech by saying, “God bless America,” but God has blessed America but America has not blessed God by reacting in a proper fashion. Hence, the coming judgment brought to you by the followers of that “peaceful religion” of Islam–or it could be a super solar storm. Whatever the cause, a major shutdown of the grid will have you sitting in the dark.

Get prepared in every way including peace with God through faith in Christ. That is the best and permanent preparation for whatever might happen.

I have been asked if it is possible for us to repent as a nation and return to greatness, or must we ride the toboggan slide to the garbage heap of history. We can repent but a return to greatness as a nation will not happen if history is any standard.

We may soon know the answer to that question.

National Disaster Ahead: The Clock is Ticking! https://donboys.cstnews.com/national-disaster-ahead-the-clock-is-ticking https://donboys.cstnews.com/national-disaster-ahead-the-clock-is-ticking#respond Sat, 14 Feb 2015 14:40:57 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=1037 An incredible statement appeared in USA Today concerning the Electro-Magnetic Pulse weapon that is a shocker: “The sky erupts. Cities darken, food spoils and homes fall silent. Civilization collapses.” Well, not the whole civilization since the destruction depends on the size of the bomb and how high in the atmosphere it explodes.

In recent years I have been castigated by friends and foes for making far less alarming statements! At least I am no long alone or in the presence of crazies, complainers, charlatans, and conspiracists. In fact, I am mainstream! Never thought that would happen.

The USA Today article admits that such a damaging, disastrous, and deadly consequence would also be attained by a super solar storm that is in our future. In September of 1859, a solar storm hit North America and Europe (called the Carrington event) and operators of the telegraph system which was the first widespread electrical device were “shocked unconscious, and machines caught on fire.” And I remind you that the telegraph system was like a tin can operation compared to modern electronic systems of computers, phones, airplanes, etc. Such solar storms occur about every 150 years. We are past due.

An article in the Russia & India Report revealed “According to one study, if the United States lost its large power transformers, 40 per cent of the country’s population would be without electrical power for as long as four to 10 years.” The U.S. no longer manufactures large power transformers so they must be ordered from abroad. There is always a one to two year delay (if things go well) before orders are filled. It would take decades to get the power back on!

Political theorist and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told a Heritage Foundation group, “It is an enormous catastrophic threat.” Ed Legge of the Edison Electric Institute in Washington who represents utilities said, “We’re taking this seriously” and the danger to the grid “may be much greater than anticipated.” Even Rep. Ed Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts declared, “The electric grid’s vulnerability to cyber and to other attacks is one of the single greatest threats to our national security.” The EMP Commission reported, “One weapon of this kind that went off over Omaha would eliminate most of the electrical production in the United States.”

If America’s cities are destroyed by an Electro-Magnetic Pulse weapon then it could be very ugly for many years. The U.S., Russia, China and North Korea are known to have such a weapon along with the ability to blast it into the atmosphere. Such a device would not kill anyone but would put our nation back in the 1800s. Anything electrical would be destroyed instantly: computers, power lines, landlines and cell phones, gas pumps, ATM machines, street lights, air control systems, military, televisions, radios, automobiles, power stations, water companies, elevators, and everything requiring transistors. Nuclear power plants would not be able to cool the sensitive equipment resulting in a meltdown. Everything would have to be rewired or rebuilt or replaced.

Furthermore, an EMP weapon would have no “return address” so how could the U.S. know whom to hold accountable? Moreover, there would be no way to hold any nation accountable. No plane, missile, or ship could function!

Whether the fuse is lit by the nut in North Korea, the dictator of China or Russia or a Muslim fanatic eager to meet his 72 green-eyed virgins, those responsible for protecting Americans must stop trying to control us and start trying to protect us. Or at least help prepare for what some say is inevitable.

I suggest that U.S. politicians get serious about this threat today and be honest about what is ahead of us. They should be telling us to prepare for disaster: food, water, bomb shelters, escape routes, etc. Peaceful Muslims must also get serious today, and report known terrorists in their circles, vigorously condemn the killers, and wave the American flag as they sing, “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy.” But frankly, it may too late to close the barn door since the horses are galloping down the road. We have been soft rather than sensible; weak rather than wise; mild rather than militant; and relaxed rather than resolute. When bombs (nuclear or EMP) explode, all bets are off. A reign of terror may ensue, and the America we know will be gone forever.

Talk show hosts have asked me if my message causes people to panic, and I always reply that I am trying to make people be awake and aware without being alarmed. However, at this time in the crisis, maybe it is time to be alarmed! No, not irresponsible, out of control panic. Just the everyday kind of alarm that makes your blood run hot, your adrenaline flow, your hands sweat profusely, and your mouth as dry as an oil well I invested in.

If an EMP explodes in the atmosphere over the Midwest or a massive solar storm hits then every electronic device will be fried instantaneously. At that time, everyone who has not prepared for disaster will panic. I would like for you to realize that you may have already waited too long to properly prepare, and if you wait much longer, it will be too late to buy gold, guns, and groceries. Everyone will rush for the doors at the same time, and you and your family may be crushed.

The name of the game will be survival, only survival. Forget the job since it will be gone. Your Social Security or pension check? Don’t count on it. Even if taxes could be collected there would be no way to deliver your checks. Protection by local authorities? Probably not. You will be on your own.

The fuse is lit and America and the world are holding their breath.
