KKK – Don Boys https://donboys.cstnews.com Common Sense for Today Sun, 05 Mar 2023 04:46:50 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.6.29 Is Blackface Always Bigotry? https://donboys.cstnews.com/is-blackface-always-bigotry https://donboys.cstnews.com/is-blackface-always-bigotry#respond Thu, 07 Feb 2019 23:10:19 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=2290 The state of Virginia is in trouble. Recently it was discovered that Governor Ralph Northam’s 1984 yearbook reveals him in blackface or dressed as a Klan member. The yearbook photo was of a man in blackface and another man in a Klan costume. Northam was not sure which one he was; then he denied that he was even in the photo but he did confess that he had imitated Michael Jackson in blackface.

Gasp!

Everyone is aghast at such actions but few gagged and gasped for breath at the governor’s defense of killing newborn babies; so it seems blackface is anathema but baby killing is acceptable. President Trump was right when he declared, “All children, born and unborn, are made in the image of God.”

It got worse for the Democrat administration when the state’s Lt. Governor Justin E. Fairfax was accused of a 2004 sexual assault by a college professor. Then it was revealed that the Washington Post (champions of the double standard) had the story a year ago but refused to publish it. You may remember that they were not reticent to run an unsubstantiated story about Judge Brett Kavanaugh. But then, he is a Republican.

Then, another shoe dropped when Virginia’s Attorney General Mark R. Herring confessed to wearing blackface at a party in the 1980s—now all three top officeholders are in trouble.

Of course, like buzzards circling over a road kill, Al Sharpton showed up and called forcefully for Northam and Herring to resign saying, “If you sin, you must repent for the sin.” Such sanctimonious hypocrisy would gag the aforementioned buzzards. Sharpton is America’s number one race-baiter, with Jesse Jackson a close second. Sharpton has never answered for the Tawana Brawley hoax that destroyed six innocent men in 1987.

Tawana was 15 years old when she told police and reporters that she had been raped by six white men, including a local prosecutor and a police officer, who scrawled racial epithets on her body and left her in a vacant lot, according to The New York Times. Her lie, supported by Sharpton, ruined six men but made Al a television commentator on MSNBC although he has major problems reading plain English from his teleprompter. His show is seen by hundreds, maybe thousands of viewers.

Al is back doing his thing (race-baiting) since blackface is a terrible crime against humanity. But is it? Is it possible that one can do a blackface routine without being a racist?

It seems admitting doing blackface is worse than killing helpless babies. Most of Virginia’s Democrat leaders and many national Democrat leaders demanded that Northam resign. However, they were not concerned with him advocating the killing of newborn babies, just his blackface or KKK episode.

To most people, the photo of him (or whomever) in blackface and the other of a man in a KKK robe are equivalent. They are not. They are worlds apart. It must be remembered that the Klan was a white terrorist group of southern Democrats founded after the Civil War. A group of former Confederate veterans founded the first KKK as a social club in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1866. When it reached its peak in the 1920s, the membership had more than 4 million members in many states.

The KKK members (mostly Democrats) were incensed that Blacks were elected in the Reconstructed south (as Republicans) during the late 1860s. During those days, seven black politicians were killed by the Klan. Klan members adopted a white, hooded costume—a guise intended to represent the ghosts of the Confederate dead—to avoid identification and to frighten and intimidate white and black Republicans. The Klan specialized in murder, lynching, arson, rape, whippings, and bombings.

To condone or to defend the Klan is irresponsible; however, blackface should be looked at as the immature actions of college students who have more time than they have social consciences. The guilty Whites parading as Blacks were not necessarily bigots; only thoughtless morons. It is said that the earliest blackface performances stereotyped black men and women as “ignorant, hypersexual, superstitious, lazy people who were prone to thievery and cowardice.” After watching a blackface act in 1848, abolitionist Fredrick Douglass called the white performers “the filthy scum of white society” in his The North Star newspaper.

Yes, there was that aspect of blackface but there is another side also.

In the early 1900s, Blacks were played by white actors in blackface because the white elite did not think Blacks could learn their lines and fake emotions required by the script. Moreover, Blacks were banned from Broadway productions and were finally employed in movies as dumb, slow-talking, lazy, stumbling, or dangerous “darkies.” This practice was common into the 1930s. Then Al Jolson, in blackface, became a sensation to Blacks and Whites. Al Jolson was a Jewish immigrant who became the most famous and highest paid entertainer in America. He was considered “The World’s Greatest Entertainer.” He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Blacks by wearing blackface.

While Jolson appeared in other roles, he became famous for The Jazz Singer where he won the hearts of Americans even in blackface. The oldest black newspaper in the nation Amsterdam News stated that The Jazz Singer in 1927 was “one of the greatest pictures ever produced,” and that, “Every colored performer is proud of him (Jolson).” Jolson chose to star in The Jazz Singer which defied racial bigotry by introducing black musicians to audiences worldwide.

Jolson introduced America to Black musicians and actors according to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture stating, “Almost single-handedly, Jolson helped to introduce African-American musical innovations like jazz, ragtime, and the blues to white audiences.”

According to film historian Eric Lott, “For the white minstrel man to put on the cultural forms of ‘blackness’ was to engage in a complex affair of manly mimicry…To wear or even enjoy blackface was literally, for a time, to become black, to inherit the cool, virility, humility, abandon, or gaité de coeur (cheerfulness with a light heart) that were the prime components of white ideologies of black manhood.” Lott thought Jolson was a positive for Blacks and Whites.

Jolson, as a 25 year old, fought discrimination on Broadway and later in the movies. Furthermore, he promoted a play by Garland Anderson (a black) which became the first production with an all-black cast produced on Broadway. Jolson demanded equal treatment for Cab Calloway, with whom he performed duets in the movie The Singing Kid.

Noble Sissle was a black songwriter in the 1930s who declared, “[h]e was always the champion of the Negro songwriter and performer, and was first to put Negroes in his shows.”

Jeni LeGon, a black female tap dance star, recalls her life as a film dancer: “But of course, in those times it was a ‘black-and-white world.’ You didn’t associate too much socially with any of the stars. You saw them at the studio, you know, nice—but they didn’t invite. The only ones that ever invited us home for a visit was Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler.”

British performer Brian Conley, former star of the 1995 British play Jolson, stated during an interview, “I found out Jolson was actually a hero to the black people of America. At his funeral, black actors lined the way, they really appreciated what he’d done for them.”

No one considered Jolson a racist in his day and it is contemptible for moderns to make unfair, untrue, and unwarranted judgments about his blackface performances. Haters and bigots do not treat the object of their hatred as did Jolson. His blackface performances were not proof of bigotry, but were his way of helping black performers by putting first himself and then them in front of his audiences.

There is an inclination to judge the past in the light of modern standards. It is unreasonable to criticize early Americans and their relationship to Indians without knowing what it was like to live in constant fear of being scalped, raped, or burned alive while living in a lonely cabin many miles from assistance.

Likewise, it is unfair, even silly to hold anyone’s feet to the fire for what he or she did in college. I refuse to fault the governor or any other politician for doing blackface when they were younger; however, I do believe anyone who defends, promotes, and advocates the killing of babies should be recognized as baby butchers and be shunned by polite society.

Killing innocent, defective babies is not just a slippery slope; it is a bottomless pit.

An Open Letter to Dr. Rick Warren! https://donboys.cstnews.com/an-open-letter-to-dr-rick-warren https://donboys.cstnews.com/an-open-letter-to-dr-rick-warren#respond Mon, 20 Feb 2017 02:54:43 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=1736 Rick, after I mentioned you in a column, Cal Thomas was concerned and suggested I contact you about your positions. He was convinced that you would be willing to help me and respond to my concerns. Many preachers take kind rebukes and corrections as a jealous, mean-spirited attack on their ministry. That is not my motive.

You have often mentioned that your critics never contact you as required in Matthew 18 before they criticize you in print; however, you refuse to participate in Matt. 18 ministry. I sent you an email on Jan. 13 and I received a note that someone would be in touch with me about my concerns but I never heard from you or one of your spokesmen.

I am thrilled that you have baptized 46,000 converts in 36 years! Obviously, you must be doing something right. However, is it possible that you might be doing something wrong?

Cal sent me your comments about my column, “American Churches Have Lost their Sense of Shame!” and I assure you I want to be accurate and fair even if we totally disagree as to how ministry should be done. I know what it is to be misquoted so I will appreciate your cooperation.

I am Baptist, author, columnist, former writer of columns for USA Today, and former member of the Indiana House of Representatives. Cal suggested that you would be willing to make sure I had up-to-date information before I send my column to various Internet sources. My columns have been published on websites such as Canada Free Press, WorldNetDaily, Barbed Wire, Conservative Truth, Free Republic, the Olive Branch Report, Capitol Hill Outsider, Publius Forum, and many others.

I know you are far busier than I am and I appreciate any information that will make my comments accurate and balanced. All but the last two questions can be answered with yes or no.

*Did you address the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and did you chide them for their support of Muslim terrorists?

*Have you ever publically demanded or even suggested that Muslims repudiate sharia and jihad; sexual mutilation of girls; honor killings for being “too non-Muslim”; killing of those who reject Islam and trust Christ; etc.?

*Your photo hugging Muslim Cat Stevens is famous but isn’t it dangerous to not make clear that you do not support his extreme position on the threat to kill Rushdie? And his statement, “I’m praying to Allah to give us victory over the kuffar.”? Do you want a Muslim victory over non-Muslims?

*Was it wise to share the platform with Muslim extremists without any rebuke to them and no explanation to the public of your disapproval of their false teaching?

*There would be a similar issue with your hugging Elton John and your statement about the “kiss heard round the world.” Isn’t that too frivolous and giving aid and comfort to homosexuals when they demand their “right” to be accepted regardless of their perverse lifestyle?

*Have you stated publically that the homosexual lifestyle is evil and should be eschewed?

*Do you believe that Mormonism is a part of Christianity?

*Would you share the platform with KKK leaders?

*Do you think the Apostles would have remained quiet about the Gospel of Christ if they spoke to Jewish or Muslim groups? Steven was not concerned with “building bridges” when he told the Pharisees that Christ was their only hope. In fact, he declared, “Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.” Do you ever think it is appropriate to preach the same thing today?

*Is it wise to favorably mention Roman Catholic mystics without any disclaimers?

*Do you think the Reformation was a mistake? Are you trying to reverse it with your close association with the Pope and other Roman Catholic leaders?

*Do you ever obey Titus 2:15: “These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority.”

*Paul the Apostle commanded, “Come out from among them.” When is it right to follow that command?

*How do you respond to your incorrect claim that your book is “the best selling non-fiction hardback book in history”? I heard you say that twice and you were quoted saying it in a WND interview. You also said in that interview, “I always own up to mistakes.” Here is your chance. Please provide the date and page number of Publishers Weekly that you referenced as proof of your boast.

Rick, like most Evangelicals, seems to want a religion that is brief, bright, and brotherly but ended up with one that is meek, mild and motherly. That always results in a flawed message, method, and maybe, motive.

So sad.

Is White Pride Always Wrong? https://donboys.cstnews.com/is-white-pride-always-wrong https://donboys.cstnews.com/is-white-pride-always-wrong#comments Wed, 21 Nov 2012 16:26:24 +0000 http://donboys.cstnews.com/?p=208 Each Wednesday I post one of my old columns that I hope will be interesting, informative and maybe inspiring. Today’s column is one of the most controversal that I have written:

We have observed environmental fanatics, in collusion with the Federal government, going to outrageous efforts to preserve the snail darter, spotted owl, and the yellow belly sap sucker; so is it unreasonable to preserve America as the land of the free and the home of the brave? Why is it commendable for Blacks, Hispanics, and others to loudly proclaim their ethnicity, but when a white person does so, everyone treats him like a bigot? Last night I saw video of a young Martin Luther King Jr. declare, “I am proud to be black. Black is beautiful. Someone needs to say it.” Why is it right for him to say it about being black but wrong for me to say the same thing about being white? I will expect an answer from my critics.

Non-thinkers/racists/liberals are now defending their racism by calling me a racist! That’s like a skunk accusing a rabbit of having bad breath! Not too swift but no one says racists/liberals are very sharp or honest people. They are fanatics and totally committed to their radical agenda.

This is an issue that no one wants to deal with–the proverbial elephant sitting in a formal living room and everyone pretends it isn’t there! While I don’t want to be identified with the white supremacist crowd or the clowns of the KKK, I do think it is not only right but also desirable to be proud of our heritage–whatever our heritage is.

Of course, there are times when we are embarrassed with what white people have done and are doing, but that would be true of every group. Does affirming that fact make me a racist? Overall, white people have contributed enormously to make the world a better place–yes, even Christianized white people–that is people who aren’t Christians but who have been influenced by the Bible.

The desire to keep America the way it is with our language, customs, religion, mores, etc., is admirable and nothing to be ashamed of. Why should we want a major shift in the racial ratio, language, customs, religion, etc.? The desire for keeping America in its present state is a reason to be skeptical of mass immigration. Of course, there is no question regarding illegal immigration although liberals and Democrats (but then I repeat myself) usually try to justify such criminal activity.

My being proud of being a white Christian does not reflect badly on those who don’t fit that description, and my love for my wife and family and my considering them the best does no harm and is no criticism of others who don’t agree. Just because you think your wife is more beautiful than mine and your children and grandchildren are the brightest and most loveable does not make you a bigot. You are simply wrong, since mine are! (I have their test scores and photos to prove it!) Most sane people would agree that that attitude is desirable and completely normal. It would be abnormal if that were not true.

Massive immigration should be halted for a few years although I think exceptions should be made for those Americans who marry foreigners. In addition to temporarily halting or limiting immigration we should raise our standards requiring new citizens to sing in English all the verses of “America, the Beautiful” and whistle the National Anthem at the same time–with a mouthful of saltine crackers! Well, maybe not quite that extreme, but almost!

Hey, if unlimited immigration is good, then let other nations take in the immigrants who are “yearning to breathe free….” If it is noble, kind, and compassionate to take in an unlimited number of foreigners, then let the other advanced nations get the blessings of immigration. Furthermore, if immigrants are offended when I sing patriotic songs, fly the American flag, and pray to Christ, then tough luck. This is a big world so they can find somewhere else to live. There is plenty of empty space on the Arabian Desert!

If America continues as it is: permitting massive legal and illegal immigration we will eventually become a banana republic—without bananas and without a republic!

It is not racism to suggest that the racial ratio of America is being changed, and while some think the change is good, I don’t. Why must white people apologize for being white? Is there an advantage for losing national “whiteness”? Because we think being white is just as good as being black, brown, etc., is that prima fascia evidence that we hate other people? What is the advantage of changing the national hue?

Blacks, Indians, Latin Americans, etc., should be proud of their race, after all God made them that way. So would you mind if I believe that Whites should feel the same about being white? Would the racists out there forgive me for pointing out that white Christians (along with some scoundrels) came to this continent and discovered a land of forests, swamps, and tribes of warring Indians? There were no roads, no businesses, no churches, no hospitals, and no factories. Our ancestors drained the swamps, built log cabins and churches, planted crops, dug copper, coal, gold, and silver from the ground, built railroads, attempted to civilize the warring Indians (and made friends of the friendly Indians) and established a land of freedom and incredible opportunity like nowhere on earth. My critics will point out the mistakes and excesses which I am willing to admit; but I will add the many failures of the Indians and others, proving mankind’s fallen nature.
Moreover, I will point out that for thousands of years nothing had been done to develop the land, forests, rivers, and mining opportunities. Indians lived as they had for more than a thousand years, sitting around their campfires while their children and elderly died unnecessary and often early deaths.

Additionally, why make America into another Hispanic country? Aren’t there enough Hispanic countries as it is? There are far more nations populated by people of color than white nations. Why not have a mainly white nation here and there around the globe? Why do we need another Spanish-speaking or Islamic nation? Moreover, those who emigrate here should learn to speak English! That is the least they can do. Teddy Roosevelt suggested that any immigrant who did not learn English within five years of his arrival should be shipped back home! I agree.

Justin J. Moritz, a white, retired police officer, with no criminal record was refused a patent for “White Pride” by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because it “is considered offensive and therefore scandalous.” There is no justification for the USPTO to reject a patent for “White Pride” after approving Black Pride, African Pride, Asian Pride, Chippewa Pride, Gay Pride, Indian Pride, and many other “prides.” Can anyone defend such offensive policies and obvious discrimination? Only a racist would defend such a practice and only a fool would try.

I have defended minority people and groups all my life. I have demanded that people be treated like people. If all people are treated with respect, kindness, thoughtfulness, and graciousness, then everyone benefits. I do not endorse or support the NAACP because they are racist in seeking the benefit of “colored” people. Why not seek the advancement of people? Need civil rights leaders be reminded that the “Jim Crow” days are long gone? If we seek the advancement of everyone, that will cover Blacks, Hispanics, Whites, Indians, etc.

All my adult life I have detested unfairness, discrimination, narrow mindedness, political correctness, and cowardice. I am ashamed to say that national and state politicians, plus those in academia and the media, plus many evangelical Christians are guilty of all the above.

I await the slings and arrows from my critics and will appreciate some answers!

PASS IT ON!
